Dear valued clients,

The time has come for Beyond Movement Studio to expand.

After a considerable amount of time searching I have found a very central location in the heart of Coffs Harbour. We will have plenty of space for classes and equipment and new apparatus is to arrive from New York before Christmas.

The studio will open for business on Monday the 17th of October 2011 at 35 Little Street Coffs Harbour.

There is always plenty of parking in Little Street, the adjoining streets or at Woolworth’s car park around the corner in Park Ave.

It has been a wonderful time in Sawtell building my business together with you all and I hope that you will join me in Coffs Harbour for your classes and sessions.

I am very happy and proud to introduce Beyond Movement Studios first apprentice, Narelle Andren.

Narelle has completed her first seminar in Sydney on the weekend. She is about to embark on a 600 hour apprenticeship to become a fully certified Pilates instructor in the New York method, “Authentic Pilates”.

On completion she will receive a Diploma of Pilates. Narelle will be in the studio observing, assisting me and teaching her own clients from now on. If you are sensitive about being observed then please let me know.

If you want to discuss anything about the change of address please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Classes will continue at 10 May Street until the 15th October.

I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

Kind regards.

Suzanne McCarty

Hi everyone!

Thanks for all the great energy we have shared in term 3.

Spring has definitely arrived so it’s time to clean the house and your body.

Pilates is a great way to boost your vitality, strength and stretch out those winter aches and pains and help you enjoy this beautiful Coffs Harbour weather.

Here is the link to the timetable starting from the 3rd October

Term 4 Timetable

Listed below are some details regarding changes to the timetable:

A new intermediate Mat class at 7.30pm Mondays, I will teach the classical Pilates Mat with arm weights or stretching to end this class.

The 5.30pm intermediate Mat class will incorporate balls, bands and magic circles.

As we have many clients currently attending the 5.30pm Intermediate Mat class be sure to use the online booking system featured on the website, book in by email or phone so that your space will be secured.

I am hoping to relieve the number of clients in the 5.30pm class by adding this extra class at 7.30pm. Please cancel your booking in advance as it’s always a shame to turn away clients on the waiting list.

Gyrokinesis® on Saturdays will now be held from 10-11.30am , we will vary between practicing the 60 and 90 min format!

I am heading off to Sydney this Thursday for a seminar and have decided to take a break the first week of the school holidays, therefore:

The studio will be closed from midday Thursday the 22nd September to Sunday the 2nd October.

The new timetable will begin on Monday the 3rd October, which is a public holiday but I will be holding all classes and sessions on that day!

Even though the weather is warming up, studio policy is socks must be worn by everyone and please bring a towel for the mats and bring an extra hand towel if you tend to sweat. There is a new delivery of the half Toesox®, they are great for summer!

Term 4 special.

Every studio session block purchased in term 4 will receive a pair of Toesox® absolutely free.

See you all this week for your classes up until Thursday midday. Otherwise I’ll see you in term 4.

Thanks so much for sending along new clients to Beyond Movement Studio. Be sure to let me know if a new client came via your word of mouth and you will receive a free session if they purchase a Mat or Studio block!

I would also be extremely grateful to anyone who would like to write a testimonial for the website explaining what Pilates has done for you!

Stay happy, healthy and practice daily “the series of five”

.

If you’re in the process of trying to figure out what sort of training you want to do to improve your health and well being, then you might be a bit confused about the differences between Yoga and Pilates and wondering which one is going to be best suited to your specific needs.

So what I’m going to do here is outline some of the differences between the two and hopefully help you make that decision.

Weight Loss

While neither disciple would be considered aerobic in nature, both of them provide you with a good workout that can help in your overall weight loss plan.

There are more strength based exercises involved in Pilates, as well as a greater amount of movement of your body throughout the session and this gives it a bit of an edge over Yoga as a way of helping you manage your weight.

Over time as your Pilates experience grows you’ll find that the strengthening of the muscles of your body increases your metabolic rate, which in turn helps you burn more calories throughout the day.

Strength

As mentioned above, Pilates involves more exercises that are aimed at strengthening your body, and in particular the core section of your body.

These exercises use both your own body weight and specially designed Pilates equipment to help you develop greater strength throughout your body.

Yoga is more static in nature. Your session will consist mainly of static poses and there is no equipment used. Strength is not a key focus of Yoga.

Flexibility

Yoga will definitely improve your flexibility. The static poses used are designed in such a way that the overall flexibility of your muscles in these static poses will steadily improve over time, and generally quite quickly.

Pilates on the other hand focuses more on addressing imbalances in your muscles, rather than how flexible they are.

In many ways this is actually better for your body than simply focusing on static flexibility – you’ll have greater control over your body during movement and injuries will occur less frequently when your muscle groups are well balanced.

Mental Well Being

While both Pilates and yoga place an emphasis on the connection between the body and the mind, with Yoga the focus is on achieving relaxation, inner peace and enlightenment through exercise.

It is almost a form of meditation that offers physical benefits as a great side effect.

With Pilates the connection between mind and body is more about increasing your awareness of your body as it moves so as to improve and maintain good posture and body positioning.

Back Injury Prevention & Treatment

A huge focus of Pilates is on the strengthening of the core muscles that power all movement in the body.

This makes it perfect for people who are looking for a way to strengthen their back and help prevent injuries in this area.

A skilled Pilates practitioner will be able to work with you on a one-on-one basis to make sure you do the appropriate exercises in the correct way so that you can reduce the chances of back injuries occurring (or re-occurring).

While Yoga can improve flexibility, it was not really designed with any rehab or injury prevention goals in mind, and there are certain poses which will need to be avoided by anyone with back issues.

Summary

So in terms of pure physical benefits, there is generally more that can be achieved through a Pilates training regime than you would achieve from Yoga.

But if you are keen to add an Eastern spiritual element to your training than you may want to have a look at Yoga first to see if it offers what you’re looking for.

Still can’t make up your mind?

Why not book in for a free session and talk to us about what you’re trying to achieve and whether or not we can help you get there.

Beyond Movement Studio offers Pilates training in Sawtell and Coffs Harbour

Give Suzanne a call on (02) 6653 1219 and we’ll organise a time for you to come in and have a free trial session so you can see for yourself what it’s all about.

Potential Pilates clients should be aware that some Pilates certifications require less training than others.

Some certifications only cover the mat work- just one part of the Pilates method. Some require little training- and other certifications are rigorous.

A fully certified Pilates instructor undergoes a thorough course that adds up to hundreds of hours of training and studying. They learn the entire method including The Mat work and exercises taught on all of the Pilates apparatus.

The terms “authentic, classical, real, original” Pilates link to Pilates instructors trained by Romana Kryzanowska.

Romana Kryzanowska’s original certification program The Pilates Method of body conditioning and The Pilates Studio in New York City required a minimum of 75 pre-requisite sessions with a certified instructor.

To enter the program one had to pass an audition consisting of performing the intermediate level exercises on the mat and all the Pilates apparatus as well as an interview. The certification began with a 12 day intensive seminar of approximately 100 hours.

This was followed by an apprenticeship of at least 600 hours, which included observation of fully certified instructors, private session training, supervised teaching by a teacher of teachers, attendance of meetings and self training.

Three practical exams and three written exams (200 hours-basic, 400 hours- intermediate, 600 hours- advanced and full system) must be passed before the apprentice could receive a full and authentic certification to teach the Pilates method.

After gaining full certification the Pilates instructor undergoes an annual Continuing education seminar.

Suzanne McCarty from BMS is fully certified by the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning, New York, 2000.
